About Me
Greetings, I am Simcha, a clinical psychologist trained at SUNY Binghamton, New York. I am also a trained neuropsychologist. I obtained my first two degrees, B,A and B.Ed at the University of Zululand. I obtained a Fulbright scholarship and studied in the United States of America. I completed my predoctoral internship training at Howard University Hospital which was followed by a two year post internship training at St Elizabeths Hospital in the forensic unit in Washington DC. This afforded me with pre-trial and post-trial work experience as a clinical psychologist. I returned to Upstate New York where I worked as a clinical psychologist for three years at Elmira Correctional Facility. During that time, I was a member of APA and AABT. I returned to South Africa and registered with the HPCSA and practiced in both the public and private sectors as a clinical psychologist and as a neuropsychologist. I also trained as an Executive Coach for a year. I am currently a member of SACNA and SAPSAC. I have been practising for over 20 years. I had initially begun as a high school teacher. I taught English and History. I later taught at a teacher training college specialising in special educational psychology and didactics. I am currently in private practice.
My Special Interests
My clinical interests are in affective disorders in their many different manifestations. Another interest is that of anxiety disorders also in their many different presentations. My therapeutic approach is mainly cognitive behavioural. There are also many human aspects that lend individuals in daily dysfunctional living arising from lack of knowledge, skills deficits or a combination of both. Some of the deficits lend themselves to psychoeducation. There are disabling conditions that emerge as a result of cognitive decline or cognitive impairment due to many factors. I like working in this area which usually affects independence self worth and may other aspects.
Why You Should Work With me
I am trained in assessment which leads to diagnosis and treatment. If there is a need to refer to another professional, this is discussed anytime during the encounter of scheduled sessions. I do take into account that the different aspects of being human do not exist in isolation for example, we are bio-psychosocial beings. Psychotherapy provided is individualised and working towards empowering people is crucial. At times people need a little nudge in the desired emotional direction and there are times when much more is needed to reconstitute emotionally and achieve the desired emotionality or desired goal(s). When psychotherapy has been completed one should have a sense of control as a result of new found coping skills, learning to think differently or learning new behaviours. The one seeking therapy should be committed to change.
